Your organization’s demands are the same in January as in June. The people delivering them are not.
Anchorage makes visible something every workforce experiences and almost every employer ignores, which is that human capacity moves on a cycle and workload usually does not.
Providence Alaska Medical Center is the state’s largest hospital, with over four hundred beds, roughly twelve hundred nurses, and more than eight hundred fifty physicians, and Providence is the largest private employer in Alaska with a workforce over five thousand. The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium employs more than thirty seven hundred people and is the largest tribal health organization in the country, operating the Alaska Native Medical Center, the only tribal-operated hospital in the United States to hold Magnet status for nursing. Southcentral Foundation adds thousands more. Around them sit Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, the State of Alaska, the Anchorage School District, the University of Alaska, ConocoPhillips and the resource sector, Alaska Airlines, and Ted Stevens Anchorage International, one of the world’s significant air cargo hubs. Tourism runs hard from May through September and then stops.
Nobody here needs to be told that a shift in deep winter is different from one in high summer. The light itself changes what people have available to give, energy swings on a schedule everyone can predict, and the visitor economy piles its entire year into a few months.
What is interesting is that some industries here already build around this and others pretend it does not exist. Resource work runs formal rotations, on and off, because nobody expects a person to be continuously deployed. Tourism staffs up and stands down. Meanwhile the hospital, the district, and the office run the same expectations in the darkest week of the year as in the brightest, then treat the resulting dip as an attitude problem.
Leaders who take the cycle seriously do three specific things. They schedule the heavy lift, the big rollout, the hard initiative, into the part of the year when people actually have capacity for it. They plan for the difficult stretch rather than being surprised by it every single year. And they read seasonal fatigue as what it is, because a team that is flat in January is usually not disengaged, it is tired in a way that has an end date.
Anchorage just states this more plainly than anywhere else. Every organization in the country has its own version of a dark month, and most leaders have never once scheduled around it.
Chris runs national healthcare staffing organizations and has keynoted state association conferences in eleven states, including LeadingAge Illinois and health care associations in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, and Colorado.
