The city crossed over. The question every leader here should sit with is who came along.

Winston-Salem has done something few American cities manage, and the human side of that story is where the leadership lesson lives.

This was a tobacco town. R.J. Reynolds money built the medical school that opened here in 1941. Today Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is the largest employer in Forsyth County with a workforce above nineteen thousand across nearly two hundred buildings, and health care accounts for roughly a fifth of the county’s employment when you count the two major hospital systems and the medical school. The Innovation Quarter occupies more than three hundred acres of downtown, much of it in the old Reynolds industrial district, and now houses around ninety companies and thousands of jobs in biomedical science, advanced materials, and digital work. Reynolds American and Hanesbrands are still headquartered here, alongside Novant Health, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State, Truist, and Wells Fargo.

The buildings tell the story plainly. Space that once processed tobacco now holds laboratories. That is a genuine achievement and the city deserves the credit it gets for it.

Here is the part that gets less attention. Institutions cross over. Individuals often do not, at least not automatically. The person who ran a production line in the old economy did not become a research scientist because the building changed hands. Transitions tend to succeed at the level of a city or a company while quietly failing at the level of a particular family, unless somebody deliberately builds the crossing for them.

That is not history in this region, it is a live question. Health care is changing roles under people right now, with new technology, new documentation, and new expectations arriving faster than most staff were trained for. Manufacturing is doing the same. Every leader in this city is currently deciding, mostly without noticing it, who they are going to carry across and who they will let quietly fall behind.

The practical version is unglamorous. Identify the people whose current role is shrinking before they figure it out on their own. Offer the training while they still have standing rather than after they have become a problem to solve. Tell them plainly that you intend to keep them. Most people will do remarkable things to stay somewhere that made it clear they were wanted.
