Culture normally passes down from people who were here first. In Charlotte there often are not enough of them.
Two things are happening in this city at once, and together they break the mechanism most organizations quietly rely on to transmit how things are done.
The first is merger. Advocate Health is headquartered here, created in December 2022 when Advocate Aurora and Atrium combined, now running roughly one hundred sixty thousand employees and sixty nine hospitals across six states as one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the country. Atrium alone, founded in 1940, carries around seventy thousand people, fourteen hundred care locations and better than fifteen thousand nurses. On the banking side, Truist exists because of a merger and put its headquarters here, Bank of America is headquartered here, and Wells Fargo runs its East Coast operation here. A very large share of the people working in Charlotte’s biggest employers now work for an organization whose name did not exist when they were hired.
The second is arrival. The regional business alliance counts roughly one hundred fifty seven people moving to this region every day, and more than two thirds of them are between twenty and thirty four. Financial services alone accounts for more than one hundred thousand jobs here and has been growing several times faster than the national rate.
Put those together. Culture usually transmits informally. A new person watches someone who has been there eight years and learns what is actually expected, as opposed to what the handbook says. That requires a critical mass of people who have been there eight years. In a merged organization inside a city absorbing that much in-migration, there frequently is not one, and the people who could have carried it are themselves adjusting to a company they no longer fully recognize.
Which means culture here has to be stated rather than inherited. Out loud, specifically, and far more often than feels necessary, because nobody is absorbing it by osmosis. Leaders who assume the room already knows how things work in Charlotte are usually talking to people who genuinely do not.
Chris runs national healthcare staffing organizations and has keynoted state association conferences in eleven states, including LeadingAge Illinois and health care associations in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, and Colorado.
