Why Chris Fits San Francisco

Half your workforce is debating three days or four. The other half was never in that conversation.

No American city split its workforce as cleanly as San Francisco did, and most organizations here have not said out loud what that did to the people who could not participate.

San Francisco carries the highest office vacancy rate in the country, in the range of thirty six to thirty seven percent, up from roughly five percent before the pandemic. Its office workers return to their desks less than those of any other top ten metro. Salesforce is the city’s largest private employer and has spent years adjusting badge requirements. The city government itself has been pushing its own staff back in. Meanwhile UCSF is the second largest employer in San Francisco with more than twenty four thousand people, Kaiser and the region’s other systems employ tens of thousands more, and none of those nurses, techs, therapists, transport staff, custodians, food service workers or security officers were ever part of the flexibility conversation, because their work happens inside a building.

That produces something corrosive and largely invisible to leadership. A nurse who commutes an hour each way, on a schedule set by somebody else, watches colleagues at the same employer negotiate whether coming in four days a week is unreasonable. She is not going to say anything about it in an engagement survey. She is going to notice, and quietly revise her opinion of whether this organization’s stated values were written with her in mind.

The specific leadership failure here is describing flexibility as a company value when it is structurally available to only part of the company. Everyone on the frontline can see the arithmetic.

The alternative is not to take flexibility away from people who have it. It is to name the asymmetry honestly and then deliberately buy back some control for the people who cannot have that kind, through schedule predictability, real input into when they work, and swap and self-scheduling systems that actually function. Control over your own time is the thing being distributed unequally here. Some of it can be given back in another currency, but only by a leader willing to admit the gap exists.

Chris runs national healthcare staffing organizations and has keynoted state association conferences in eleven states, including LeadingAge Illinois and health care associations in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, and Colorado.

Operator, Not Consultant

President and COO of national healthcare staffing organizations, still making the scheduling and retention calls he speaks about.

Onsite Workforces

Material for the people whose jobs were never remote, and for the leaders who need to address that without pretending otherwise.

Clinical and Corporate

Works for a hospital leadership day or a corporate all-hands, and for organizations trying to speak to both at once.

San Francisco Organizations

Groups Chris speaks for.

San Francisco combines a global technology and financial sector with major academic medicine and a large public workforce.

  • UCSF and UCSF Health, the city’s second largest employer with more than twenty four thousand people, for nurse leadership, all-staff, and recognition events
  • Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, Dignity Health, and the region’s hospitals, across the city and the wider Bay Area
  • Technology and corporate employers including Salesforce, the city’s largest private employer, and the financial services firms across the Financial District, for all-hands gatherings and leadership summits
  • City and County of San Francisco departments, for agency in-service and leadership development days
  • National and statewide associations holding annual meetings at Moscone and the city’s conference hotels, the format Chris works in most often
  • Long-term care, home care, and behavioral health providers serving the city and the Bay Area
  • Hospitality, transit, and retail employers whose workforces never left the building
Beyond Healthcare

San Francisco employers on both sides of the split.

Healthcare is where Chris operates, and it sits squarely on the side of this divide that gets talked about least.

Hospitals and Clinical Teams

Staff whose presence is the job, working alongside administrative colleagues who may rarely appear on site.

Technology and Financial Services

Employers navigating return to office policy while their own facilities, security and support staff have no such choice.

Hospitality, Retail, and Transit

Frontline workforces most affected by the drop in downtown foot traffic and least consulted about it.

Public Sector

City departments where the same asymmetry exists across job classifications and is felt keenly.

Questions

Booking a keynote speaker in San Francisco

Has Chris spoken for large health systems and associations?
Chris runs national healthcare staffing organizations and has keynoted state association conferences in eleven states, including LeadingAge Illinois and health care associations in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, and Colorado. See past speaking events.
Does Chris travel to San Francisco?
Yes. Chris is based in Fremont, Nebraska and speaks nationwide. SFO and Oakland both work, and travel is handled as part of the booking.
Is the session going to criticize our remote work policy?
No. It does not argue that anyone should lose flexibility. It argues that leaders should stop calling flexibility a company value when only part of the company can use it, and should give the other part control over their time in a different form.
Our frontline staff seem fine. Why raise this?
Because the people who feel it are usually the least likely to say so. Resentment about an asymmetry nobody has acknowledged tends to show up in turnover rather than in a survey, and by then it reads as a pay problem.
Can the session run for multiple shifts?
Yes, and here it should. Bookings often run the session more than once in a day, or pair an in-person session with a virtual repeat so evening, night, and weekend teams are included.
What does a San Francisco keynote cost?
Fees depend on format, travel, session length, number of repeats, and whether the booking includes a workshop or book copies. Each event is quoted directly, usually within one business day.
Can Chris speak virtually to a Bay Area audience?
Yes. Virtual keynotes and webinars are available with no travel cost, which suits distributed teams, chapter meetings, and member education. See past webinars.
