Somebody on your team was a physician, an engineer, or ran their own company. Their badge does not say so.
Miami has a workforce composition unlike any other large American city, and it changes what a leader is actually managing.
In Miami-Dade County the foreign born make up roughly two thirds of the employed labor force, a share no other major metro comes close to. They account for a majority of the county’s STEM workers and the large majority of its manufacturing workforce. They also make up close to three quarters of the county’s entrepreneurs, in a county with hundreds of thousands of registered small businesses. Around that workforce sit Miami-Dade County Public Schools, one of the largest districts in the country, Baptist Health South Florida and Jackson Health System, the University of Miami and Florida International University, American Airlines at Miami International, and the cruise lines headquartered here.
Here is what that means on a practical level. A significant number of people in your building trained for something else, somewhere else. Credentials rarely transfer cleanly across borders, so a person who practiced medicine, engineered systems, or ran a company in another country may now hold a role well below what they are capable of doing. Their job title describes what they were hired for. It does not describe them.
Most leadership is calibrated to the title. You manage the role in front of you, assign to the job description, and develop people along the track the org chart implies. In Miami that approach quietly wastes an enormous amount of capability, and the person on the receiving end knows exactly what is being overlooked.
There is a second consequence that shows up in turnover. In a place where starting a business is this common, an employee who feels underused has a nearby alternative that most workforces do not have. They do not only leave for another employer. They leave to work for themselves, and they take the ability you never asked about with them.
Which points at something a leader can actually do. Ask what people did before this job. Assign above the title when someone shows you they can carry it. The message that a person is capable of more is not a motivational sentiment in this city, it is an accurate description of the room.

Built on Human Potential
The core message is that people are capable of more than their current role asks of them, which is literally true of much of this workforce.
