This city refused to depend on one thing. Most organizations depend on about four people and call it stability.

Henderson made a deliberate decision decades ago that is worth applying inside a building rather than only across a city.

Nevada’s second largest city sits next to an economy defined by tourism and gaming, and it intentionally built something else. Health care anchors it, with St. Rose Dominican operating campuses across the valley including the Siena hospital, alongside Henderson Hospital and the Valley Health System. The City of Henderson is a major employer in its own right. Google runs a data center here. Haas Automation is building out advanced manufacturing, and West Henderson has become a manufacturing and logistics corridor. The result is a local economy that does not rise and fall with the Strip, which was the entire point.

Now look at the same question one level down, inside an organization. Almost every employer has concentrated its dependency onto a handful of people. The one person who actually understands how the billing system works. The charge nurse who is the only one who can handle a certain family. The technician who is the only one who can get that machine running again.

Leaders often like this arrangement, because it feels like reliability. It is fragility wearing a nicer word. One resignation, one illness, one long vacation and a whole function stops.

It is also unfair to the person, which is the part that goes unexamined. Being indispensable sounds like a compliment and functions like a cage. That person cannot take real time off, cannot be developed into something larger, and often cannot be promoted, because the organization has quietly decided it needs them exactly where they are. Over time they figure that out, and they leave to get the growth you would not give them.

The fix is the same strategy Henderson used. Deliberately spread capability. Cross train before you need to. Make the expert teach rather than only perform. Treat a person who has trained a successor as having done something valuable rather than as having made themselves redundant. A team where several people can do the hard thing is more resilient, and every one of those people has somewhere to go next.
