Your turnover number is the best in the company. It is also the least useful number you have.
A national operator running a plant in Fremont said something about this town that most places never get to hear about themselves, which is that turnover here came in lower than anything the company had seen anywhere else it ran the same business.
That is not a small thing. Lincoln Premium Poultry, the dedicated poultry supplier for Costco, employs roughly twelve hundred people in Fremont producing millions of birds a week. Hormel has been processing here since the nineteen forties. Wholestone Farms and Fremont Beef add hundreds more. Valmont grew out of this area and took half of its name from the town. Manufacturing is the single largest sector in a local workforce of roughly eighteen thousand five hundred. Around the plants sit Methodist Fremont Health, Fremont Public Schools, Midland University, Dodge County, and the City of Fremont.
Low turnover is a genuine achievement and most companies in the country would trade a lot for it. The problem is what leaders here tend to do with it.
When people stay by default, a specific muscle goes soft. Nobody has to be persuaded to stay. A manager who has never lost a good person to a competitor has never had to find out whether they are worth working for, and they can go an entire career without ever getting that information. In a high turnover market, the market itself delivers that feedback, harshly and on a schedule. Here it never arrives.
Meanwhile, staying and being engaged are not the same thing, and a retention number cannot tell them apart. Someone can give you twenty two years and spend eight of them checked out. In a tight labor market that person leaves and at least you learn something. In Fremont they stay, and the only signal is quiet. Ideas that stop getting offered. A shift that runs exactly to standard and never a step above it. A veteran who trains the new hire correctly and without any warmth.
So the leadership work here is a different job than it is in Dallas or Phoenix. It is not about holding on to people, because they are already staying. It is about making sure the people who were always going to stay are actually getting somewhere. That means knowing what someone wants to be able to do three years from now and handing them the work that builds it, rather than assuming a long tenure is automatically a good one.
Fremont makes this unusually clear, because the loyalty is real and it is not in question. The waste is not that people leave. It is that capable people stay for decades and never get asked for more than they were asked for in their first year.
Chris runs national healthcare staffing organizations and has keynoted state association conferences in eleven states, including LeadingAge Illinois and health care associations in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, and Colorado.

- Midland University, for campus, athletics, and staff programming
- Fremont Public Schools and area districts, for staff in-service and leadership days
