You are not competing with Manchester. You are competing with Boston, and the tax code is on Boston’s side.
Roughly one in five New Hampshire workers commutes into Massachusetts for their job, according to the state’s own employment security agency. That figure alone would be a recruiting problem. What makes it sharper is the part nobody says out loud.
New Hampshire has no general income tax on salaries and wages. That is usually framed as a reason to live here. Look at it from an employer’s chair and it reads differently, because it means a New Hampshire resident earning a Massachusetts salary keeps more of that salary than a Massachusetts resident earning the same money. The state’s signature advantage does not help you hold onto workers. It quietly subsidizes their decision to drive south and work for somebody else.
Concord sits right on the edge of where that decision flips. About seventy miles up I-93 from Boston, roughly an hour in good conditions, it is far enough that the commute is a genuine grind and close enough that plenty of people do it anyway. South of here the drive is easy and the wage gap wins. North of here the commute stops being realistic. Concord is the boundary, which means employers in this city can still win, but only barely, and never on the paycheck.
What is left is everything else. Whether the work is interesting, whether the schedule respects someone’s life, whether the person they report to is worth reporting to, and whether an hour of their day is better spent here than on the highway. Those are not soft factors in Concord. They are the entire competitive position, and they are what this session is built around.
Chris runs national healthcare staffing organizations and has keynoted state association conferences in eleven states, including LeadingAge Illinois and health care associations in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, and Colorado.
Operator, Not Consultant
President and COO of national healthcare staffing organizations, still making the hiring and retention calls he speaks about.
Losing to Higher Payers
Healthcare staffing is an industry where somebody is always paying more, so competing on everything except wage is daily work rather than theory.
Built for Small Rooms
Sessions scale down cleanly. A forty person in-service day gets the same preparation as a general session.
Groups Chris speaks for.
Concord holds New Hampshire’s state government and one of the largest concentrations of healthcare employment in the state, which makes it the natural place for a statewide workforce keynote to land.
- Concord Hospital and the Concord healthcare community, part of a sector employing more than five thousand people in the city, one of the largest concentrations of healthcare providers in New Hampshire
- New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, headquartered on Pleasant Street in Concord with a workforce approaching three thousand, for in-service and leadership development days
- New Hampshire Employment Security, based on South Fruit Street, along with the rest of the state agencies concentrated in the capital
- Lincoln Financial Group and the insurance, legal, and professional services firms clustered around state government
- New Hampshire statewide hospital, long-term care, municipal, and education associations, which convene members and hold advocacy days in the capital
- Concord School District, area colleges and training institutions, and Merrimack County government
- Chambers of commerce and SHRM chapters across central New Hampshire
Concord employers on the same fault line.
Healthcare is where Chris operates, but every employer in this city is bidding against a commute.
State Government
Agencies staffing a state that runs lean by design, where individual employees carry wide scope and leadership development happens through in-service days.
Insurance and Financial Services
Carriers and professional firms competing directly against Boston financial employers for the same credentialed people.
Distribution and Manufacturing
Concord’s position on I-93 makes it a distribution and transportation hub, with shift work that competes against warehouse wages to the south.
Education and Nonprofits
School districts and social service organizations recruiting from a pool that can earn more an hour down the highway.
