Employee Appreciation Week Ideas.
Thirty-four employee appreciation ideas grouped by budget and by remote versus in-person teams, plus the 2027 date for Employee Appreciation Day and a simple five-day plan.
Employee Appreciation Day is held on the first Friday in March, which in 2027 is Friday, March 5. Many organizations stretch it into a full week. The ideas that work best are specific to the person, come from their direct leader, and include remote employees as fully as the people in the building. Pick a few from each budget level, plan a separate track for remote staff, and end the week with something that continues.
Most HR teams I talk with are not short on ideas for appreciation. They are short on time, budget and a way to make it feel real to people who have heard a lot of thank-yous that did not change anything.
That is the problem worth solving. A gift card with no note feels like a transaction. A two-line message from your manager naming exactly what you did last month feels like being seen. The best appreciation weeks I have been part of mix a few low-cost, high-meaning gestures with one or two bigger moments, and they make sure nobody gets left out because they work from home or on a different shift.
The 2027 date. Employee Appreciation Day falls on the first Friday in March, which makes it Friday, March 5, 2027. It was created in 1995 by Dr. Bob Nelson, author of 1,001 Ways to Reward Employees, according to its Wikipedia entry. Many organizations choose to turn it into an appreciation week running Monday, March 1 through Friday, March 5.
The ideas below are grouped by budget first, then by remote and in-person teams. If you are planning a celebration with a speaker, the Employee Appreciation Day speaker page covers how a keynote fits into the week.
Free and low-cost appreciation ideas

A simple five-day appreciation week plan
If you want a starting structure for March 1 to 5, 2027, here is one that balances cost and meaning. Monday opens with a leader thank-you video and the launch of a shout-out channel. Tuesday is for learning, with a lunch-and-learn or a virtual workshop. Wednesday is for managers: every manager sends specific notes or makes thank-you calls. Thursday is the fun day, with a theme day, a game hour or a treat truck. Friday, Employee Appreciation Day itself, ends with a celebration, peer-nominated recognition and, if you are bringing one in, the keynote.
The biggest mistake I see is treating the week as the whole strategy. Appreciation is one part of keeping good people, and it matters most when it continues the rest of the year. Employee Recognition Ideas has ways to keep it going, and How to Reduce Employee Turnover covers the bigger picture.
Appreciation lands
when it is specific,
personal and sincere.
Bringing a speaker to appreciation week
A keynote gives the week a shared moment, whether people are in the room or watching from home. The employee recognition event speaker page covers how that usually works. Here is how my programs map to appreciation events.
Your Team Is Capable of More
For whole teams and company-wide audiences, on how a group gets better together rather than relying on a few top performers.
Fits: Employee Appreciation Day keynotes and all-company celebrations. See the program.
You Are Capable of a Better Culture
Built on the SPARK framework: Support, Purpose, Appreciation, Relationships, and Knowledge and Growth, the everyday leadership habits that make people want to stay.
Fits: manager sessions during appreciation week, focused on recognition that lasts. See the program.
The Power of Small Moments
Built on the CARE framework, about the small, everyday interactions that shape how customers, patients and coworkers experience an organization.
Fits: service teams, healthcare and frontline staff. See the program.
You Are Capable of More
My signature keynote on closing the gap between what people are doing and what they are capable of, built on the book of the same name.
Fits: celebrations that pair the keynote with a book for every employee. See the keynote.
Any of these can be delivered in person, virtually or in a hybrid format, so remote employees get the same experience as the people in the room.
Employee Appreciation Week 2027
- Put Friday, March 5, 2027 on the calendar and decide whether you are celebrating the day or the full week.
- Plan the remote track first, so remote and hybrid staff get the same moments as everyone else.
- Ask every manager for specific notes and give them a deadline before the week begins.
- Mix budget levels: several free ideas, a few moderate ones, and one bigger moment.
- Decide what continues after the week, such as a monthly shout-out or a quarterly recognition moment.
Employee Appreciation Day 2027 is Friday, March 5. Plan a week that mixes free, personal gestures with one bigger moment, build the remote track first, and make sure every manager writes specific notes. Then decide what continues after the week, because appreciation means the most when it does not stop on Friday.
