Keynote Speaker vs. Motivational Speaker
What each term means, where they overlap, and how to decide which one your event actually needs.
A keynote speaker delivers the main session that sets the tone and theme for an event. A motivational speaker focuses on energy and inspiration. Many speakers are both, but they are not the same thing: a keynote can be motivational, educational or both, while a motivational talk does not have to be built around your event’s theme. For most conferences, the best choice is a keynote speaker who motivates and also leaves the room with something practical to use.
Planners use the two terms interchangeably, and so do speakers. The difference matters less than what you want people to do after the session.
I am a keynote speaker and the bestselling author of You Are Capable of More, which won the How-To category at the 2026 Paris Book Festival. I am also a sitting executive: President and COO of Uniti Med, GQR Healthcare and Nebula. I helped grow Uniti Med 10x in revenue in two years, which earned it the #3 spot on the Inc. Regionals list of fastest-growing companies in the Midwest.
What is a keynote speaker?
The keynote is the main general session, usually opening or closing the event, built around your theme. A keynote speaker’s job is to frame the whole event and give everyone in the room a shared message they will hear echoed in the breakouts.
What is a motivational speaker?
A motivational speaker is defined by the goal rather than the slot: to lift energy, belief and commitment. Motivational talks show up as keynotes, at kickoffs, at award banquets and at team meetings. Some are pure inspiration. The best ones pair the energy with something people can act on.
Which does your event need?
- You need a keynote speaker when you want one session to frame the whole event and tie to your theme.
- You need a motivational speaker when the main goal is energy and belief, such as a kickoff, a celebration or a hard year.
- You need both when you want the room fired up and also want people to leave with a framework or a set of actions they will actually use.
Is Chris Sund a keynote speaker or a motivational speaker?
Both. My signature keynote, You Are Capable of More, is motivational at its core: people are capable of far more than they realize, and the gap closes when they stop waiting and start taking ownership. But it is built on original research with more than 200 working adults, 92% of whom said they were capable of more than they were doing, and it ends with actions people can take that day.
That pairing of energy and substance is what conference committees ask for. It is why I am booked for opening keynotes at associations, for sales kickoffs and for employee recognition events. See also motivational speaker and inspirational speaker.
A keynote is a slot that frames your event; motivation is a goal. Most conferences are best served by a keynote speaker who motivates and also leaves people with something practical to use.
