In a cleanroom you cannot see anyone’s face. Recognition has to survive that.
Chandler’s defining industry has a physical condition that quietly makes the human part of leadership harder, and almost nobody plans for it.
Intel operates its largest United States manufacturing campus here, with roughly ten to twelve thousand workers across two Chandler sites and a multi-billion dollar expansion at Ocotillo, where Fab 52 now produces the most advanced logic chips made in this country. Microchip Technology is headquartered in Chandler, NXP runs a manufacturing and research campus, and Northrop Grumman, ASML, and Applied Materials round out the cluster. High technology manufacturing accounts for hundreds of firms and roughly a quarter of all jobs in the city. Wells Fargo is the second largest employer, Chandler Unified School District employs thousands, and Dignity Health’s Chandler Regional Medical Center anchors the clinical side.
Now picture the work environment inside a fab. Full coverage garments, hoods, masks, gloves, safety glasses. You cannot see a face. You cannot read an expression. From twenty feet away you often cannot tell who a person is at all. It is a brilliant solution to contamination and it is an accidental obstacle to almost everything a leader normally relies on.
Most recognition runs on visual, informal cues. You notice someone looking discouraged. You catch an eye and nod. You see who stayed late. In a suited environment, all of that is stripped out. A supervisor can walk a floor for an hour and interact with nobody in particular, and the people working there can go an entire shift without being individually seen by anyone.
So the human part has to be deliberate rather than incidental. Say names out loud constantly, since names are the only identifier left. Introduce yourself every time, because the person cannot tell it is you. Do the real conversations in the gown room, at handoff, and in break areas where faces exist. Write down what you noticed, because you will not remember a suit.
Healthcare learned this the hard way with masks and full protective equipment, and many clinical teams never fully went back. The lesson is the same in both places. When the environment hides people, being seen becomes something a leader has to produce on purpose.
Chris runs national healthcare staffing organizations and has keynoted state association conferences in eleven states, including LeadingAge Illinois and health care associations in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, and Colorado.
