What AI Cannot Do for Your Team
AI can draft, summarize and organize faster than any of us. It cannot build trust, notice the person who is struggling or make someone believe they are capable of more.
AI cannot build trust, read a room, notice when someone is quietly struggling, make values-based judgment calls, take responsibility for a decision, give genuine encouragement or tell a story from lived experience. It can take repetitive work off a team’s plate, which gives people more time for the human parts of leadership and work that matter most.
I use AI every day to run my companies, and it has given me back hours every week. I teach teams how to do the same. So I say this as someone who is genuinely enthusiastic about the tools: there are things AI cannot do for your team, and they happen to be the things that matter most. Pew Research Center found that 52% of U.S. workers are worried about AI’s future impact at work. Part of a leader’s job is helping people see where their value lies.
Everyone now has access to the same tools. What separates great teams is the human part.
What AI cannot do for your team
- Build trust. Trust comes from kept promises and shared experience.
- Notice the person who is struggling. Leaders see what is not said.
- Make values-based judgment calls. Who we are shapes what we choose.
- Take responsibility. Someone has to own the decision.
- Give genuine belief. “I see more in you” means more from a person.
- Tell a lived story. Experience that helps someone else decide.
Trust and relationships
Relationships are the foundation of every team. People trust leaders who keep their word, show up where the work happens and see the human behind the role. AI can draft the thank-you note, but the relationship it reflects has to be real.
Noticing people
Some of the most important leadership moments start with noticing something: a quieter-than-usual teammate, a dependable person who has started missing deadlines, someone who needs a word of belief. Those moments require attention and care that no tool provides.
Judgment and responsibility
AI can lay out options. It cannot decide what fits your values, weigh what matters most to the people involved or take responsibility for the outcome. Leaders and teams still own their decisions.
Belief and storytelling
Some of the most powerful things a leader does are telling someone they are capable of more and sharing a story that helps them see it. Those words mean something because a real person with real experience is saying them.

AI can handle drafting, summarizing and organizing. It cannot build trust, notice the person who is struggling, make values-based judgment calls, take responsibility, offer genuine belief or tell a lived story. Use it to free up time for the human work that matters most.
