For the people who moved here for the job, you are not just the employer. You are the entire local world.
Plano is one of the most corporate dense cities in the country, and a great deal of that density arrived by relocation rather than by growth.
Toyota consolidated its North American headquarters here in 2017 on a hundred acre Legacy West campus, pulling roughly four thousand roles out of Torrance, Erlanger, and New York into Collin County. JPMorgan Chase built a regional campus next door that now employs more than eleven thousand people and is the city’s largest corporate employer. Capital One has thousands more, Liberty Mutual consolidated regional headquarters operations here, and Frito-Lay and FedEx Office run global and corporate headquarters in the city, alongside Ericsson, NTT Data, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Companies keep arriving from California, Washington, and the midwest, and AT&T announced a new global headquarters campus on Legacy Drive.
When a headquarters relocates, only a portion of the workforce comes along. The rest of the roles get filled locally, which means the company keeps its name, strategy, and logo while a large share of the people who carried its habits and unwritten rules stayed behind. On the org chart it looks like continuity. Inside the building it is closer to a new company that inherited a brand.
The more overlooked half concerns the people who did move. Someone who relocated a family across the country for a job gave up nearly everything that was not the job. Friends, extended family nearby, their kids’ schools, their doctor, their church, the neighbors who would watch the house. For at least the first year or two, their employer is the largest structure in their life by a wide margin.
That is a real responsibility, and most leaders do not register it. A difficult manager somewhere else is a work problem that a person goes home and complains about to their existing community. A difficult manager here can be the primary relationship in a transplanted employee’s week. The same is true in reverse, which is why a leader who makes an effort at the human part earns loyalty in this market far out of proportion to the effort involved.
The practical steps are ordinary. Ask how the move is actually going, months after everyone stopped asking. Make introductions rather than assuming people will build their own network. Say what the company’s unwritten rules are out loud, since half the room never learned them by osmosis.
Chris runs national healthcare staffing organizations and has keynoted state association conferences in eleven states, including LeadingAge Illinois and health care associations in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, and Colorado.
