Salem Hospital is licensed for 644 acute care beds, making it one of the largest of Oregon’s sixty two acute care hospitals, and Salem Health describes its emergency department as the busiest on the West Coast. What works instead is unglamorous and rare. Say plainly that this is the normal load, not a temporary one. Then build around that truth rather than around a recovery that is not coming, which means real recognition inside the pace instead of after it. People can carry a great deal when nobody is lying to them about how long they will be carrying it.
