How to Become a Better Leader
Leadership is not a title you receive. It is a set of habits you build, most of them about how you help other people grow.
To become a better leader, earn trust before expecting it, develop the people around you, listen more than you talk, give clear expectations and regular feedback, own your mistakes publicly, recognize people specifically, coach rather than rescue and keep learning yourself. The best leaders measure their success by how much the people around them grow.
My first leadership role was a shift supervisor at a restaurant, early in my career. I earned that promotion by working hard and doing the extra things. But I quickly learned that being the hardest worker in the room did not automatically make me the leader people wanted to follow. I could not do everything myself. I had to earn people’s trust so they would follow me.
That lesson has stayed with me through every leadership role since. For the bigger picture of what leaders can unlock in people, read Human Potential: A Complete Guide.
Eight habits of better leaders
- Earn trust first. Through consistency and care.
- Develop your people. It is the job.
- Listen more. Understand before you direct.
- Be clear. Expectations and feedback.
- Own mistakes. Out loud.
- Recognize specifically. Name what someone did.
- Coach, do not rescue. Questions first.
- Keep learning. Leaders are learners.
Earn trust before expecting it
People may follow instructions, but that does not mean they believe in where you are trying to take them. Trust comes from consistency, honesty and genuine care over time. See How to Build Trust With Your Team.
Develop the people around you
Gallup found that managers account for at least 70% of the variance in team engagement. Developing people is not an extra. It is the job. See How to Develop Your Employees.
Listen and be clear
Better leaders ask more questions and give clearer answers. Listen to understand, then make expectations and feedback specific. See How to Listen So People Feel Heard.
Own mistakes and recognize others
When something goes wrong, take responsibility out loud. When something goes right, give the credit away, specifically. Both build the kind of trust that makes people want to follow you.
Coach rather than rescue
Leaders who solve every problem become the ceiling on their team. Ask questions, let people work through it and trust them with more than they expect. See Coaching Questions for Managers.
