The Real Reason Employees Underperform
Chris Sund joins host Nick Day on The HR L&D Podcast to make the case that self-doubt, not skill, is what holds most people back, and what HR and L&D leaders can do to close that gap.

The gap between belief and results.
Chris surveyed more than 200 working adults for his book. Ninety-two percent said they believe they are capable of more than they are doing, and 71 percent said they regularly fall short of what they set out to do. When asked why, the top answer was not time, money or opportunity. It was self-doubt.
Nick and Chris use that finding as a starting point for a conversation built for HR and L&D leaders: why your best next hire may already be on your team, why fast growth reveals a culture instead of creating one, and why coaching is the leadership skill most managers were never taught. Chris also shares the story behind the book and his own unconventional start, including dropping out and rebuilding his belief in what was possible.
A lot of retention strategy is built like a fence: perks, contracts and policies meant to keep people from leaving. Chris argues those companies often lose people anyway. The organizations that keep their best people build launch pads instead, places where people can see themselves growing into the next role. He and Nick also talk about busy bravery, the habit of staying busy so you never have to start the one task that actually matters.
