How to Qualify a Sales Lead

The fastest way to sell more is to stop spending time on people who will never buy. Qualifying leads early protects your most valuable resource: selling time.

The Short Answer

To qualify a sales lead, confirm the prospect has a real problem you solve, understand why it matters now, identify who makes and influences the decision, learn their budget range and buying process, agree on a timeline and next step and be willing to walk away early when the fit is not there.

Selling time is scarce. Salesforce found the average seller spends only 40% of their time actually selling. Every hour on a lead that will never close is an hour taken from one that will.

Qualifying is not about rejecting people. It is about finding out quickly, and honestly, whether you can help.

Qualify

Six questions to qualify a lead

  1. Problem. What are you trying to solve?
  2. Impact. What happens if nothing changes?
  3. Timing. Why now?
  4. Decision. Who else is involved in this?
  5. Budget. Have you set aside a range for this?
  6. Process. What does buying look like from here?

Start with the problem

If there is no real problem, or it is not one you solve well, there is no deal. Ask open questions and listen. See Sales Discovery Questions.

Understand why now

Problems without urgency stall. Ask what happens if nothing changes in the next six months. See How to Create Urgency in Sales.

Map the decision

Many deals stall because the seller only talked to one person. Ask who else will weigh in and what they care about.

Walk away early when it is not a fit

Being honest that you are not the right fit builds trust and frees time for buyers you can help. They often come back later or refer someone who is.

Selling with purpose is the focus of You Are Capable of More Sales. See also Consultative Selling.

Your Takeaway

Qualify leads early by confirming the problem, its impact and why now, mapping the decision makers, understanding budget and process and agreeing on next steps. Walk away early when the fit is not there.
