How to Invest in Yourself

The best investment most people can make does not show up in a brokerage account. It is the time, attention and effort they put into becoming more capable.

The Short Answer

To invest in yourself, protect regular time for learning, read and listen with a way to capture what you learn, build skills that compound, take care of your health and energy, seek out mentors and people ahead of you, step into stretch opportunities and reflect on what you are learning. Small, consistent investments in yourself compound over years.

For about a decade I have kept a log of anything valuable I hear: lines from books, ideas from podcasts and stories people tell me. Every so often I sort it by topic. It is one of the best investments I have made, because it means what I learn does not disappear a week later. Much of it ended up in my book and my keynotes.

Investing in yourself does not have to be expensive or dramatic. It is mostly about treating your own growth as something that deserves time on the calendar.

Your Portfolio

Seven ways to invest in yourself

  1. Protect learning time. Even twenty minutes a day.
  2. Capture what you learn. A log you actually review.
  3. Build skills that compound. Communication, leadership, selling.
  4. Protect your energy. Sleep, movement, food.
  5. Find people ahead of you. Mentors and peers who have done it.
  6. Say yes to stretch. Opportunities slightly beyond you.
  7. Reflect regularly. What am I learning, and what will I change?

Protect time for learning

Learning only happens if it has a place on your calendar. Twenty minutes of reading in the morning, a podcast on the drive, a course on Sunday evening. Time is your edge, because of how you choose to use it. See You Do Not Need More Time.

Capture and review what you learn

Most of what we read and hear is forgotten within days. Writing it down, and reviewing it, turns information into something you can use. See How to Keep a Lessons Log.

Build skills that compound

Some skills pay off in almost every part of life: communicating clearly, leading people, selling ideas, managing your time and handling hard conversations. Investing in these early keeps paying returns for decades.

Protect your health and energy

Your potential depends on your energy. Sleep, movement and food are not separate from personal growth. They are the foundation it is built on.

Find people who are ahead of you

Talking with people who have already done what you want to do is one of the fastest ways to grow. Ask good questions, listen and follow up. Most people are generous with what they have learned when someone asks sincerely.

Say yes to stretch opportunities

The project that feels slightly beyond you, the presentation you are nervous about, the role you are not sure you are ready for. These are where the biggest returns usually are. Every time you stretch beyond what feels familiar, something new is revealed.

Your Takeaway

Investing in yourself compounds. Protect time for learning, capture and review what you learn, build skills that pay off everywhere, protect your energy, learn from people ahead of you, say yes to stretch and reflect regularly.
