How to Get Customer Feedback You Can Actually Use

Most customer surveys collect scores that sit in a dashboard. Useful feedback tells you what to fix, and it only matters if you act on it.

The Short Answer

To get customer feedback you can use, ask short and specific questions, ask soon after the interaction, include one open-ended question, talk to customers directly, listen to front-line employees, look for patterns rather than single comments and close the loop by telling customers what you changed. Feedback is only valuable when it leads to action.

Many businesses survey customers constantly and change very little. Customers notice. When feedback disappears into a void, they stop giving it.

Seven ways to get useful feedback

  1. Keep it short. Two or three questions.
  2. Ask soon. While the experience is fresh.
  3. Ask one open question. What could we do better?
  4. Talk directly. A few real conversations.
  5. Ask your front line. They hear it daily.
  6. Look for patterns. Not one-off comments.
  7. Close the loop. Tell customers what changed.

Ask short, specific questions soon

Long surveys get abandoned. Ask two or three specific questions soon after the interaction, plus one open-ended question: what is one thing we could do better?

Talk to customers directly

A handful of real conversations often reveals more than hundreds of survey responses. Ask a few customers each month what is working and what is not, and listen without defending.

Listen to your front line

Front-line employees hear customer frustrations every day. Ask them regularly what customers complain about most, and treat their answers as feedback.

Close the loop

When you change something because of feedback, tell customers. It shows them their voice matters and makes them more likely to share again.
