How to Build a Personal Brand at Work Without Bragging

A personal brand is simply what people say about you when you are not in the room. You build it through the work you do and how you help others, not through self-promotion.

The Short Answer

To build a personal brand at work without bragging, decide what you want to be known for, do consistently excellent work in that area, help others generously, share what you learn through short posts or presentations, credit others publicly and let your results speak. A strong personal brand comes from being reliably helpful in a specific way.

When people hear personal brand, many picture constant self-promotion. That is not what builds a reputation that lasts. Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room: she is the one who always calms upset customers, he is the person to ask about scheduling, they will tell you the truth.

I have been recruited into every early role in my career because people saw my work. That is a personal brand built through action.

Brand Building

Six ways to build a reputation that lasts

  1. Choose your strength. What do you want to be known for?
  2. Be consistent. Reputation is built through repetition.
  3. Help generously. Share what you know.
  4. Share what you learn. Short posts, talks or tips.
  5. Credit others. Generous people are remembered.
  6. Let results speak. Show the work.

Choose what you want to be known for

Pick one or two strengths you want people to associate with you. Then look for chances to use them, especially in ways others can see.

Share what you learn

Sharing helpful insights, in a team meeting, a short LinkedIn post or a lunch-and-learn, builds credibility without bragging. It puts the focus on helping others, not on yourself.

Credit others

People who give credit generously are remembered well. Talking about what your team accomplished, and naming who helped, builds your reputation as a leader people want to work with.

Your Takeaway

Your personal brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room. Choose what you want to be known for, be consistent, help generously, share what you learn, credit others and let your results speak.
